o   Re-pinning things to the board
·         Cutting floral and leaf motifs from lace as well as crystals and beading from tulle backing which was later pinned and hand sewn onto gowns.
·         Continued making more “fish”
·         Hand sewed two bra/bodices that were draped on a form by Daniel.
·         I helped Hillary make trims
·         Cutting out 40 yards of two types of tulle that were sent to Vogue Too to have a gathering technique done to it.
·         Created 1 inch side pleats to a half yard of veil tulle the width of the fabric and then sewn along one side.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/TASKS DEVELOPED OR INTRODUCED THIS WEEK:
·         Bridal project: creating panels for the skirt of a gown

·         More panels for skirts of gowns
·         Draping:
o   I cut tulle and used it to messily drape pleats.

·         Bridal Flowers
o   I helped create various versions of bridal flowers
o   I learned a new pleating technique.

SELF-EVALUATION OF WEEK’S PERFORMANCE OF INTERNSHIP:
I am so excited about learning all of the new bridal techniques and I have really enjoyed seeing the collection come together.  I can’t wait to see the end result from the photo shoot.  I asked Daniel, a member of the bridal design team, how she comes up with so many amazing floral shapes using randomly cut fabric shapes, like circles or strips.  She told me that...

...it is a new way to thinking and opening your mind up to the possibilities of anything you see being made using fabric.

After she told me that, I was very inspired and began looking at things around me and thinking about how I could recreate it using fabric.

I have really enjoyed my experience at Vera Wang.  I love the city and at this age I feel like I can really thrive in such a fast passed environment.  I have also loved working with the design team and other people who work at Vera Wang.

One of my favorite parts of my day is saying good morning and good night to all of the seamstresses and patternmakers in the production studio.

They are all so sweet and have shown me so much kindness.  They are always so thankful for all of the interns’ hard work and they treat us like we are part of the team.

I am now starting to look for jobs here in New York City.  I have created an account on stylecareers.com.  I have also talked to some of the design team and let them know that I would love to work there in the future if they ever have an opening.
I was really nervous to talk to the design team about wanting to work there but I knew that I needed to at some point.  I felt like it was hard to find the right time because we are so busy now with bridal, but I know I needed to soon so that they can be aware of what I would like to do in the future and that I would be available if a possition does open up.

I will soon be graduated and finished with my internship and there are a lot of variables to think about and figure out once I am done, but I know that I need to just trust that it will all work out and take it one day at a time.

WEEKEND:

This weekend I went with my roommate to a coffee shop called Georges Andre Vintage Cafe close to where we live in Brooklyn.  We love it and try to go once a week.  On sundays they have a live DJ outside and play silent fillms on a porjector.  Everything in the coffee shop is also vintage.  It is a really playful atmosphere and their couchs are super comfy.  If you want to visit their Facebook page click here! If you are ever in Bedstuy, you should check it out!

Love Always,
Sydni

SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK’S ACTIVITIES:
·         Organize Design/Fit Meeting Room
o   Closet organization and taking out the old ready to wear collection and putting in the new sample garments from the ready to wear spring 2015 collection.
o   The old samples now will go to sample sales or they will be thrown out.
·         I machine and hand sewed trimmings.
·         Finished hand basting down floral design on a tulle canvas.
·         Copied patterns
·         Cut floral and leaf motifs from lace.
·         Errands:
o   Pick up from Vogue Too for tulle panels that had a gathering technique.  – Later I steamed them and hung them up in the fit meeting room.
o   Dropped off a folder and pictures from the fit meeting at Vera Wang’s Apartment
·         Questions answered by Eleanor  (bridal design team member):
o   Bridal started this season a couple days after last season ended.  Vera was very inspired by last season and had sketches and ideas to show the team at a meeting.  The team had a couple months to pull together the things she had showed the team so she could view them in fit meetings and the team also worked on a coupe other design ideas of their own to leave in the fit meeting room to see if she may see them and use them for the collection.   The last season was so amazing and they put together the video below to debut the Spring 2015 Bridal collection!  If the video is not working you can also click here!

SPECIFIC SKILLS/TASKS DEVELOPED OR INTRODUCED THIS WEEK:
·         Bridal project with Hillary: creating panels for the skirt of a gown
·         Bridal project with Sarah and Hillary: Fish/Floral Shapes
·         For Production:
o   Drew out technical sketches for the trimmings on the bodices, jackets and vests in the spring RTW collection.
o   Copied the front pattern for a skirt, scanned and printed the front of the actual skirt twice.  I then used one to tape together as the whole front of the skirt and then the other I cut out the crystals on the front of the skirt so they could be later taped onto the pattern where they will be later placed in production.
o   Cut out scanned and printed embellishments used on one of the dresses and re-scanned and sent to Anne so she could shrink and use in the technical packages.
SELF-EVALUATION OF WEEK’S PERFORMANCE OF INTERNSHIP:
After making a few of the fish with Hillary, I took them to Daniel to make sure we were making them correctly.  She said that they were the best she has ever seen!  I was so excited!
I really enjoyed working with Hillary on the bridal projects.
She has lived in New York now for five years and is now going to school at Parsons.  She is a part time intern at Vera Wang, but she is always there on the weekends if she is needed and always has a good attitude. She is also amazing at suggesting restraunts and fun places to go around NYC.

After cutting out the floral and leaf motifs from the lace, I was later informed, that it was $800.00 per yard and
I freaked out a little bit!  Haha!
Walking through the park in the mornings is one of my favorite ways to start the day.  It helps me to relax before the crazyness of the day begins.
I also love calling my family on my lunch breaks sometimes to check in and stay connected with them.
Family is super important to me because I know that they will always be there for me no matter what and they have always supported me in chasing my dreams.

This is my dad and me walking down the street I live on when he came to visit last week!

WEEKEND:
This weekend I went to Rockaway Beach to go on a run and lay out for a little bit.  I really love that my sister and dad brought my car and I can now go on drives to the beach and escape the crazyness for a while and relax.  I love the ocean is only a 30 minute drive away.  I had some time to walk around and I saw a lot of abandoned businesses and homes that were still being re-built after Hurricane Sandy hit.  It was sad to see that some places were still struggling or completely shut down.  I am sure it will just take a lot of time before it is fully restored.

It was great spending time reflecting on my experience so far at Vera Wang and dream about what I want to do next!

Love Always,
Sydni

Week # __5___                Date of report:  ______9/7/14__________
Log work hours during past week of internship:  90 hours 20 minutes
Monday __9:00AM-11:59PM__   Tuesday   _12:00AM-12:30PM__   Wednesday __9:00AM-7:15PM__ Thursday __9:00AM-10:05PM__ Friday __9:00AM-11:00PM__Saturday__9:30AM-11:00PM__Sunday__9:00AM-12:00PM
SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK’S ACTIVITIES – INCLUDE DUTIES, TRAINING, AND EXPOSURE TO NEW AREAS OF INTERNSHIP ORGANIZATION:
·         Cleaning the Design Process room where Vera Wang does all her decision making
o   Organize things pinned onto the 8 Boards
o   Organize the collection onto the racks by fabric prints and type
·         Pattern copying
·         Hand sewing:
o   Sewing on hook and eyes
·         Machine sewing:
o   Shurring/Ruching down the center of pinked strips of various fabrics.
·         Helping unwrap new pleated tulle from Vogue Too and hanging up on hangers.
·         Errands:
o   going to companies in Midtown to collect buttons and garments
o   picking up and dropping off at Vogue Too to get fabrics pleated
SPECIFIC SKILLS/TASKS DEVELOPED OR INTRODUCED THIS WEEK:
·         Cutting strips of different sizes using a pinking rotary cutter.
·         Making Scarves from tulle
·         Creating fabric samples:
·         Copying patterns and also marking the placement of mink fur spaced 2.5” and strips on another pattern that were 2” apart.  The placement on the patterns are a little more tricky because the sewing is on a curve so I needed to make the first rows 1.25” from CB, which had a slight curve.  I also needed to make sure the front lines matched perfectly with the back.
·         Hand sewing a harness made of bugle beads, ruffeled strips of gauze and a ribbed ribbon, I assembled (hand stitched) the strips together to form a harness.  I worked on these with Ginean.  She is a pattern maker at Vera Wang and she walked me through the process.  She has worked at Vera Wang for 2 years and before that she worked at Zac Posen for 6 years.  She told me that in the beginning of a season she has more creative freedom to drape and create different patterns to show Vera and then towards the end she is more restricted to create what the design team draws out for her.
·         Questions Answered by Design Team:
o   First they have the show, then they go through a process called market where the collection is presented in our show rooms and buyers from companies can come and order from the collection and the popular buys are then sent to production to be redrafted from the original sample to be taken and create spec sheets and then sent out to production facilities abroad.
o   Most parts of the Vera Wang label are created under a licensing agreement.  All the lines such as Simply Vera at Kohl’s, White at David’s Bridal and black at Men’s Warehouse (just to name a few) are all licenses so Vera is not making many of the design choices.  They have a separate design team and location and she still has a say and hand in the final say so but she isn’t as heavily involved.  There are also store locations in London and Shanghai and these locations are also separate from the NYC Vera Wang design team.  They are also licensing; however, Vera is still very involved in those designs.
SELF-EVALUATION OF WEEK’S PERFORMANCE OF INTERNSHIP:
Even though this week I worked a crazy amount, I would not have had it any other way.  I was able to help out so much and work on so many cool projects.  I learned so much and was able to form closer relationships with people on the design team and on the production team.  We all became a team to put together a collection and I felt so grateful to be a part of that team.  The people at Vera Wang are so nice and willing to help and teach me correct techniques and they are right there struggling through the long hours with us interns.
They also showed us so much gratitude this week.
Every night we stayed past 8:00PM, they fed us dinner and on the weekends we also got free lunch.  Some days I would have free lunch and dinner.  They would also call a car service and we would all get a car to take us home.  The design team also told us that we were the best interns they have had in the past two years and that really where thankful to us for our hard work, which makes me want to work even harder and help out even more!

SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK’S ACTIVITIES:

·         GOT TO GO TO THE SHOW!!! IS THIS FOR REAL!!!!!  AHHH!!!
o   The RTW team leader was so impressed by the amount of work Sarah and I did while keeping a good attitude that she put us both on the backstage list.
o   For the show we took the shoes and cut leather loops off of the back of the heels and colored the tops using black paint pens and then we used dull pinking rotary blades to score the bottom of the shoes.
o   At the show we scored more of the shoes, checked garments for imperfections (colored basting stitches left in), and we brought the black fabric paint pens to color in spots that we saw in the embroidery on the back of jackets.  We originally tried to dye the white embroidery black; however, it would not take and kept turning purple or blue.  We decided to paint the embroidery using acrylic black fabric paint.  Hilary and Sarah painted the fabrics.
·         Hand sewing:
o  I hemmed a dress using a blind hem stitch and hand sewed in a trim that I had machine sewn.   The trim consisted of a layer of mink, a layer of gathered organza ripped on the cross grain and two layers of gathered tulle all very closely sewn together.
o   had tacked the tags into the garments and sewed in hang-loops into bottom pieces
·         Cut strips of organza and wool on bias as well as malfroy tulle all in various widths.
·         Errands:
o   going to Johnathan Embroideries in Midtown to get garments buttonholed
·         I was able to overhear the sales meeting about costing the new collection and their process of choosing which pieces to move into production and which pieces were canceled out.  Some pieces were too expensive to make for production or they were not sellable.  Some pieces needed to have specific changes made before moving into production.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/TASKS DEVELOPED OR INTRODUCED THIS WEEK:
·         Re-organizing the Design Process room where Vera Wang does all her decision making
o   changing from RTW to Bridal
o   Packing into bins all of the fabric technique samples into bags and then into bins and then into the closet.  Bins where labeled.
·         Creating Bridal Flowers
·         Machine sewing

SELF-EVALUATION OF WEEK’S PERFORMANCE OF INTERNSHIP:
This was one of my favorite weeks.
I pulled an all-nighter at work on Monday night with the design team, seamstresses, patternmakers, and fabric cutter.  We all made it through together and we were shown so much appreciation for our hard work.  Getting to go to the show was amazing.  I was able to see all of that hard work be presented to the world and come together.  It was crazy how last minute it all came together.  It was literally like a more intense version of capstone and the fashion show class mixed together.  I felt very prepared due to my all-nighters I have experienced in college and
knowing that fighting through the night results in such a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment
that next morning…and then the wave of being tired hits and sleep and rest is definitely a must.  After the show I went home and did just that.  The rest of the week I got to go home around 5:30PM and I never felt so grateful!  The rest of the week the design team continuously showed us their gratitude and told us how talented and great we were.  It felt amazing to feel so appreciated.  To view the collection click here.
After the show, the RTW design team leader, Margo, hugged Sarah and I and told us that we were the best and that they would not have been able to do it without us!  I was given so much responsibility in the midst of chaos and I didn’t hesitate or doubt my abilities.  I just did…and I proved to myself that I can do more than I ever thought was possible.
I am so excited for bridal
and to learn more about bridal fabrics, techniques, patterns/draping and where they pull their inspiration.

WEEKEND:
Friday after work my rommates and I got mani/pedis.   It was a perfect way to end the work week.  This weekend my dad and sister and her boyfriend all drove to Ney York City to visit and bring me my car.  We went to the World Trade Center 9/11 Memorial, the top of the Empire State building and Rockefeller Center.  We also went to a broadway show called "The Book of Mormon."
New World Trade Center
9/11 Memorial
Empire State Building
Rockefeller Center
City Hall Park

It was amazing to have the full weekend off and spend time with my family.  I feel rejuvinated and ready for bridal!

Love Always,
Sydni

Let The Count Down Begin!!!

"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."  ~ Matthew 11:28-30

SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK’S ACTIVITIES:
·         Cleaning the Design Process room where Vera Wang does all her decision making
o   Organize things pinned onto the 8 Boards
·         One Errand:
o   going to companies in Midtown to collect fabric rolls and garments
·         Sarah (the other intern) and I completed scanning lace which had the outline of the pattern basted with red thread.  The entire pattern piece had to be scanned, printed and then tapped together.  It was like a giant puzzle.  We had to make sure the lace motifs matched up with one another.  This was done so that the designers could then draw on the printed lace pattern piece where the embroidery needed to be placed.  This pattern was then sent out to the manufacturer that would be embroidering the gown.
·         I was talking to Natalie (my supervisor) and she said that the design team and production team for the designers make up to 300 pieces for the collection and a minimum of 40 are put into the show.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/TASKS DEVELOPED OR INTRODUCED THIS WEEK:
·         Creating fabric samples to put on Vera Wang’s inspiration board that she can mess with during fittings and help her in her design process.
o   I learned that paper is an amazing tool to use when trying to be accurate and cut smooth lines.
·         Copying patterns and also altering patterns to extent the length.  Shirts where extended into a dress and then some into a gown.  The patterns are very large and needed to be extremely accurate as well as done quickly so that the cutter had something to cut and then the sewers had things to sew.  It is like a well-oiled machine and if one part stops working then the machine would no longer be able to operate.
o   I also learned another technique for accuracy when copying patterns this week.  After the copy is completed use and awl or pin and pin the new copy on to the original and pivot the pattern making sure all of the notches and lines are lining up.
SELF-EVALUATION OF WEEK’S PERFORMANCE OF INTERNSHIP:
Earlier in the week I faced a problem.  I was working on copying a pattern for Natalie and in the middle of it Margo asked me to finish the ruching project.  I stopped and did what Margo asked.  Later, Natalie was confused why I had stopped doing the patterns and had just left them on the table.   She asked why I stopped doing what she asked and she was really upset because they were left unattended and they needed to be completed urgently.  I apologized and explained the situation.  Natalie understood the confusion and told me it wasn’t my fault and that Margo should have told her.  The next day I re-apologized and told her from now on when something like this happens I will let whoever’s project I am working on, that I am stopping to do something else.  She was extremely grateful for the apology and my concern.
I feel like I am learning so much and I am beginning to learn new things and go on less errands and doing less organizing/cleaning.  I am especially learning a lot about different fabrics and the way they feel and their names and uses.  I am learning about the way certain designers like their projects done and how to be accurate and faster in my pattern copying.
I have worked a ton of hours and I know it is only the beginning to a long-haul of many late nights in this upcoming week/weekend.  The show is on September 9th so we only have this upcoming week/weekend to pull it all together.  I am tired, but I am also super excited to see the amazing creative mind of Vera Wang spit out her dreams and visions and then be a part of the team that brings them to life!
There where a couple things that helped me get through the week!  :D

WEEKEND:

Worked all weekend, including Labor Day; however, after work I watched movies with my wonderful roomie!

"God grant me the serenity to accept thr thingd I cannot change; courage to change the things i can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as the pathway to peace..." ~ Prayer from my devotional this week.  I feel like it was pretty perfect!

Love Always,
Sydni Norie
